In an increasing digital world, people have more and more access to mobile and Internet technologies (although it must be noted that a third of the world’s population do not own a mobile phone, and 50% of the global population have no Internet). The use of technology in accessing talking therapies is developingat a pace. In fact, the NHS now offers online access to a variety of psychological therapies. Traditionally, client and therapist meet face to face in a therapy room, however with more sophisticated technology and global mobility, clients can access talking therapies from anywhere in the world if you have an Internet connection, a device and a platform such as Skype. This not only opens up possibilities for people who live in an area with limited provision but also offers an alternative option for those who experience agoraphobia, social anxiety, panic attacks and OCD, which may limit mobility.
For many people travel can be stressful, getting stuck in traffic, finding a parking space, cost of parking etc. can raise already high levels of anxiety. Remote hypnotherapy means that this is eliminated and you can start your session in your own environment. Those with busy work/family commitments, who struggle to fit in the time can just log on once the kids have gone to bed or before you start work. This makes it just that little bit easier and takes the pressure off you.
Living in rural areas has many benefits, however it can associated with low level services provision such as public transport, medical services and social opportunities. This is refereed to as ‘distance decay’ where service use decreases with increasing distance. This in itself can be challenging for many people with high levels of isolation and depression. Those who develop mental illness in rural areas are less likely to seek support than those in urban areas, resulting in some rural occupations such as farming, having high levels of suicide, Although high speed broadband isn’t as wide spread in rural areas as in urban areas, having access to online support such as hypnotherapy can really make a difference to those who find it challenging to physically seek help.
For people who travel a lot, whether for work or pleasure, remote hypnotherapy sessions can fit in with your schedule, so you know you wont miss a session. Skype sessions can be offered as a one off during a course of clinical sessions or for every session if travelling a lot. A quiet room where you know you wont be interrupted is essential (and of course Internet access). Appointments can also be more flexible, in the evening or early more for example where it might not be possible if you were booking an appointment at the clinic.
Some fears and phobias can cause people to find leaving the house a challenge. Agoraphobia, social anxiety, depression, panic attacks and OCD are just a few conditions, which mean accessing help could become part of the problem. This might mean that we start off using remote hypnotherapy but then as you progress and start feeling yourself again, you may be able to visit the clinic. Either way, I am guided by you and what you feel comfortable doing.
Exactly the same in a clinical setting with just a few adjustments. If you have not used Skype before, then I would suggest you get acquainted with it before using it for our sessions. This will help you to feel confident in using it. Another option is FaceTime or Whatsapp if Skype is proving a little tricky.
Compared to telephone/email therapy (which all have their benefits in the right situation), the live video link ensures that body language and “facial” communication is retained. Thus by positioning the webcam, tablet or smart phone, I can observe many of the visual features of hypnosis shown on your face.
Yes. There is growing evidence in this area, recognising the benefit of online therapies in certain situations. Whilst I don’t think remote hypnotherapy should not be a direct replacement for the clinical setting it can have equal benefit in certain situations mentioned above.

You will need a device such as a computer, laptop, smartphone and Internet access. You will need to download Skype onto one of these devices or if preferable you can use Whatsapp or FaceTime.
While hypnosis looks like sleep, it is in fact just deep relaxation, so you will be aware of my voice, if you need stop the hypnosis or someone walks in you will open your eyes and become aware of your surroundings.
Same as hypnotherapy in a clinical setting. The initial consultation will last 50mins. Subsequent sessions about 60mins.
